Biography
Nur ad-Din Zangi (1118-1174) was the ruler of the Zengid dynasty who controlled Syria and parts of Iraq. Born in Aleppo, he was a devout Muslim who united the Muslim states against the Crusaders. He built hospitals, mosques, and schools, and was a patron of Islamic learning. His preparations laid the groundwork for Saladin's eventual recapture of Jerusalem.
