Rahim Yar Khan residents face skyrocketing electricity bills as MEPCO adds millions of extra units, sparking outrage and allegations of overbilling.
Residents of Rahim Yar Khan are reeling from a shocking revelation: MEPCO added 9 million extra units to September electricity bills in the Rahim Yar Khan circle. This unprecedented surge has sparked widespread outrage, with consumers flooding social media and local offices with complaints of overbilling and meter tampering.
This is not the first time MEPCO has faced allegations of billing irregularities. In 2023, a similar scandal erupted in Multan, where residents protested en masse after receiving bills with inflated units. The issue was eventually resolved after a government inquiry found evidence of systemic overbilling. However, the current crisis in Rahim Yar Khan appears to be on a much larger scale, affecting thousands of households and businesses.
According to local resident Muhammad Asif, “My bill last month was 5,000 rupees, but this month it’s jumped to 25,000. I can’t afford this. Something is seriously wrong.” Asif’s frustration is echoed across the district, where many families are already struggling with economic hardships.
Experts in the energy sector point to two possible explanations: meter tampering or systemic errors in MEPCO’s billing software. “It’s unlikely that 9 million units were added due to individual errors,” said energy analyst Bilal Khan. “This suggests a larger, systemic issue that needs immediate investigation.”
MEPCO, however, has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, the company claimed the additional units were due to “routine adjustments” and urged consumers to verify their meter readings. But this explanation has done little to quell public anger, with many demanding a third-party audit of the billing system.
For families like Asif’s, the financial burden is devastating. “We’re already cutting back on essentials,” said his wife, Amina. “If this continues, we won’t be able to pay for food or medicine.” The crisis has also hit small businesses hard, with many forced to shut down temporarily due to soaring electricity costs.
The situation is further complicated by the lack of a clear resolution. While MEPCO has promised to investigate, there is no timeline for refunds or corrections. “We’re in limbo,” said local shopkeeper Javed Iqbal. “No one knows what to do next.”
Consumer rights activists are calling for immediate government intervention. “This is not just a billing issue; it’s a matter of public trust,” said activist Zara Shah. “The government must step in and ensure transparency.”
As the crisis unfolds, one thing is clear: the people of Rahim Yar Khan deserve answers—and justice.
