Blending loop quantum gravity with relational philosophy, Rovelli demonstrates that physical properties exist solely through interactions between systems rather than as intrinsic, absolute truths waiting to be cataloged.
For centuries, western science operated under a single, triumphant assumption: given enough time, computational power, and refined instruments, humanity would eventually chart every particle and decipher every law governing the cosmos. Isaac Newton built the foundation of this deterministic machine, and Albert Einstein elevated it with general relativity. Yet in his groundbreaking September 2026 publication, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli systematically dismantles this foundational ideal.
Rovelli, one of the co-founders of loop quantum gravity, argues that science's long-standing pursuit of a totalizing "Theory of Everything" relies on a flawed premise. According to his Relational Quantum Mechanics (RQM) framework, physical objects do not possess inherent, standalone properties such as velocity, position, or energy in isolation. Instead, an electron or a galaxy only manifests concrete properties when it interacts with another physical system.
"We do not observe the world from the outside like an omniscient spectator," Rovelli writes in his new text. "We are embedded within the world, and every measurement we perform is an interaction between two parts of the same universe. Therefore, an absolute, observer-independent snapshot of reality is physical nonsense."
This insight forces a radical reimagining of theoretical physics. Where classical mechanics sees a universe made of solid, independent building blocks, Rovelli sees an interconnected network of events. A particle does not exist in a specific place until light hits it, a detector measures it, or another particle collides with it. Reality, at its most fundamental subatomic tier, is an ongoing dynamic exchange rather than a collection of static things.
To construct his case against absolute knowability, Rovelli bridges quantum mathematics with ancient philosophical traditions. He draws heavily on the Greek philosopher Anaximander, who posited that nature consists of unbound dynamics, as well as the 2nd-century Indian Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna, whose concept of Sunyata (emptiness) argued that objects lack independent existence and only exist dependently.
In loop quantum gravity—the theory Rovelli pioneered alongside Lee Smolin—space itself is not a continuous, smooth fabric. It consists of minute, discrete loops woven together at the Planck scale (10-35 meters). Space and time cease to exist as a background stage; instead, they emerge directly from the relations between these quantum loops.
By unifying quantum mechanics with general relativity, Rovelli reveals a paradox at the heart of human inquiry. Every answer science uncovering generates new boundaries of ignorance. When Heisenberg articulated the Uncertainty Principle in 1927, physics recognized that measuring a particle's position blurs its momentum. Rovelli expands this principle from subatomic particles to the universe as a whole: because every observer is a subset of the cosmos, no internal measurement can ever encompass the complete quantum state of the entire universe.
The dream of total omniscience, championed by Pierre-Simon Laplace in the 18th century, collapses against the physical laws of quantum information limits. Science cannot achieve complete closure because the act of knowing constantly alters the relationship between the knower and the known.
This paradigm shift creates a stark divide within the global physics community. Theoretical physicists dedicated to string theory continue seeking an overarching mathematical equation that unifies all four fundamental forces into a single deterministic framework. Rovelli’s work poses a direct challenge to this ambition, asserting that nature is fundamentally open-ended and non-reductive.
For computational scientists and cosmologists studying the early universe, Rovelli's insights offer practical clarity. Rather than treating dark energy or the initial singularity of the Big Bang as missing pieces of a puzzle waiting for a final answer, researchers must accept that physical laws describe relationships between observations, not objective states behind a curtain.
This perspective transforms how humanity understands its place in the cosmic hierarchy. Recognizing the limits of knowability does not signify a failure of the scientific method; rather, it marks science's ultimate maturity. Science abandons dogma when it acknowledges that reality is an infinite web of connections, forever evolving beyond the grasp of absolute containment.
Rovelli argues that the universe cannot be fully cataloged as an absolute, objective entity because physical properties only exist through interactions between systems. Because any observer is an internal part of the universe, an all-encompassing measurement of reality is physically impossible.
Classical physics treats physical objects as independent entities with fixed properties like velocity and mass that exist whether measured or not. Relational quantum mechanics proves that physical properties only emerge when two systems interact, meaning reality consists of relational events rather than isolated static matter.
Loop quantum gravity demonstrates that space and time are not continuous backgrounds, but discrete quantum loops interacting at the smallest scales. This physical model reinforces Rovelli's philosophy that time, space, and matter are emergent phenomena generated entirely by relational dynamics.
